The inspiration for the name was derived from one of cigar smoking’s most recognizable icons, Sir Winston Churchill.

Calgary, Alberta’s Winston Smoke Club is not your traditional tobacconist. It’s operated by savvy entrepreneur Nathan Newman, and is dedicated to elevating the experience of all modern cigar enthusiasts, from novices all the way up to seasoned veterans of the hobby.

We spoke with Nathan about Winston Smoke Club, as well as some other venues that he’s played a key role in bringing to the city of Calgary.

House of Horvath: The Winston Smoke Club is a pretty unique concept. For those who don’t know, tell us a little more about it.
Nathan Newman: The Winston Smoke Club isn’t a smoking lounge; it’s a space dedicated to teaching and elevating the cigar ritual. Designed to help members explore the full cigar experience, it focuses on enhancing enjoyment through suggested pairings and personalized guidance. Through leveraging our cocktail bar expertise, we create layered flavors and memorable experiences, helping members appreciate the nuances of each cigar. By offering tailored pairings that contrast and complement individual palates, Winston Smoke Club guides enthusiasts toward a deeper appreciation of their cigars, ensuring each experience is exceptional.

HOH: When did the idea to open a club for cigar enthusiasts occur, and when did the club first open its doors?
NN: The idea sparked years ago, born from a passion for cigars and a recognition that many people genuinely want to dive into the world of cigars but may feel intimidated by its complexity. The Winston Smoke Club is a passion project aimed at educating beginners while also providing a platform for enthusiasts and aficionados to share tips, advice, and experiences.

HOH: So, can anyone just saunter in and buy a cigar?
NN: Absolutely! While Winston S.C. is membership-driven, non-members are welcome to purchase cigars. We recommend making an appointment to ensure we can provide the attentive service you deserve, as we’re not a 9-5 shop. Calling in advance is always encouraged for the best results!

HOH: What neighborhood of Calgary are you located in, and what else can be found in that area?
NN: We’re located in the Beltline, downtown across from The Globe Theatre! This vibrant area is known for its trendy eateries, bars, and artsy vibe. This neighborhood attracts those seeking both culinary adventures and cultural experiences.

HOH: Speaking of culinary adventures and cultural experiences, you also operate a restaurant in Calgary called The DERRICK Gin Mill and Kitchen as well as UNTITLED Champagne Lounge. Are the venues connected?

Inside the DERRICK Gin Mill & Kitchen

NN: The DERRICK Gin Mill and Kitchen, along with UNTITLED Champagne Lounge, aren’t directly connected to the Winston Smoke Club. However, Winston S.C. aligns with their spirit by focusing on quality and curated experiences. Our award-winning cocktail program at The DERRICK offers cocktails to-go, many of which are crafted to pair beautifully with specific cigars, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy a complete pairing experience outside of Winston S.C.

HOH: For those interested in membership, how does it work and what are some of its perks?

NN: The membership program at Winston S.C. is evolving as we work to shape a truly unique experience. Currently, members receive pairing advice, featured items, access to exclusive accessories, and first dibs on rare cigars. We also invite our members to special events at The DERRICK Gin Mill and UNTITLED Champagne Lounge, where they can enjoy unique experiences outside of cigars. While the program is still developing, our goal remains focused on enhancing each member’s appreciation for the art of cigars.

HOH: Do you sell any cigar accessories?
NN: Absolutely! We have a very well-stocked selection of premium “man toys” and accessories to enhance your cigar-smoking experience. We carry ST Dupont’s lineup and were the first place in the country to bring in Les Fines Lames. Additionally, we offer Colibri humidors as a more reasonable option, and we’re one of the few retailers to provide Elie Blue and H-Signature ashtrays.

HOH: It’s rapid-fire question time! Give us short answers on a few “this-or-that” questions:
Davidoff or Fuente?
Fuente. Churchill or Toro? Churchill. Maduro or Connecticut? Maduro. Punch cut or v cut? V cut. Cigar after breakfast or cigar after dinner? Cigar after dinner. Nicaragua or Dominican Republic? Dominican. LFD or EPC? EPC. Wooden match or butane lighter? Butane Lighter. Lonsdale or Petit Corona? Lonsdale. Montecristo or Cohiba? Cohiba.

HOH: What’s your favorite cocktail at the The DERRICK or UNTITLED, and what’s in it?
NN: At UNTITLED, the “EL PRESIDENTE” is exceptional. It features aged rum, Islay Scotch, cinnamon-infused vermouth, Cuban spices, house-made cola bitters, and cracked pepper.

HOH: What’s your favorite cigar and drink pairing?
NN: A classic pairing I enjoy is a Partagás Series D No.4 with a well-crafted espresso. The robust flavors of the cigar marry beautifully with the rich depth of the espresso.

HOH: Do you have any special or themed events at the Winston S.C.?
NN: While we haven’t yet hosted our own special or themed events, we’ve collaborated on various occasions to provide a cigar experience at other events. These collaborations typically take place during the summer months when the weather permits, allowing us to share our passion for cigars in a dynamic setting.

HOH: What advice would you give to someone who is new to the world of cigars?
NN: Start with a mild blend and take the time to appreciate the flavors. Find a mentor, enjoy the process, and remember that there’s no need to rush, cigar enjoyment is all about savoring the moment.

HOH: If you could only smoke one cigar for the rest of your life, what would it be?
NN: It would have to be the Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series. Its complexity and elegance make it a timeless choice.
